Emergency HVAC Repair: What to Do When Your System Fails in Extreme Weather
Extreme weather doesn’t give much warning around here. One day it’s manageable, and the next the Capital Region is locked in a deep freeze or stuck under a stretch of high humidity and triple-digit heat indexes. When your heating or cooling system quits in the middle of it, the stress hits fast. We’ve answered those late-night and early-morning calls for decades at Adams Heating & Cooling, and the same pattern shows up again and again: people try a few things, get frustrated, and then reach out.
Here’s a practical guide for what to do when your system fails during extreme weather—whether it’s a furnace that won’t fire up in a January cold snap or an air conditioner that stops cooling during a July heat wave.
Start With Safety
Before you touch anything, make safety the priority. If you smell gas, hear hissing near the furnace or boiler, or your carbon monoxide detector is going off, leave the house immediately and call the gas company or emergency services from outside. Do not try to diagnose the problem yourself in that situation.
If there’s no gas odor and the CO detectors are quiet, you can move on to basic checks. Turn the thermostat off, then back on. Confirm it’s set to the correct mode (heat or cool) and that the temperature setting is realistic. Check the circuit breaker or fuse box for a tripped breaker. Look at the furnace or air handler switch—sometimes it gets bumped off by accident. These simple steps resolve more emergency calls than most people realize.
Check the Filter and Airflow
A clogged filter is one of the top reasons systems struggle or shut down under heavy load. Extreme weather pushes your equipment harder, and restricted airflow can cause the system to overheat, freeze up, or short-cycle. Pull the filter and look at it. If it’s dirty, replace it. While you’re at it, make sure supply vents and return grilles aren’t blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Restricted airflow makes a bad situation worse.
Look Outside (Carefully)
For air conditioning failures in hot weather, check the outdoor unit. Clear away leaves, grass clippings, or anything else blocking the sides or top. In winter, make sure snow or ice hasn’t buried the outdoor portion of a heat pump or the exhaust vents on a high-efficiency furnace. Never force ice off the unit with sharp tools—gentle warm water or simply waiting for milder temperatures is safer. If the outdoor unit is covered in a thick layer of ice during cooling season, the system likely has a deeper issue that needs a technician.
Temporary Measures While You Wait
If the system is completely down and you’re waiting for help:
- In cold weather, close off unused rooms, hang blankets over windows, and use space heaters carefully (keep them away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended). Keep the thermostat at a safe minimum if the system is partially working.
- In extreme heat, close blinds and curtains on sunny windows, use fans to move air, and stay hydrated. Avoid opening windows during the hottest part of the day if outdoor air is hotter than indoor air.
- Check on vulnerable family members, pets, and neighbors. Extreme temperatures can become dangerous quickly.
These steps buy time, but they are not long-term solutions.
When to Call for Emergency HVAC Repair
If the basics don’t restore heat or cooling, or if you notice unusual noises, burning smells, water leaks around the unit, or repeated breaker trips, it’s time to call a professional. Attempting to work on gas lines, electrical components, or refrigerant systems without the right training and tools is risky and can void warranties or create bigger problems.
At Adams Heating & Cooling, we offer 24/7 emergency service across Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Clifton Park, Latham, and the surrounding areas for exactly these situations. Our technicians are familiar with the systems common in Capital Region homes and carry common parts so many repairs can be completed on the first visit. Whether it’s a furnace that won’t ignite, a boiler that has lost pressure, a central air conditioner that has stopped cooling, or a ductless system acting up, we’re equipped to diagnose and fix it.
A Few Things That Help Prevent the Next Emergency
Most emergency HVAC repair calls we see during extreme weather started as smaller issues that were easy to overlook. An annual maintenance visit before the heating or cooling season begins catches worn parts, dirty components, and efficiency problems while the weather is still mild. Keeping filters changed, vents clear, and the area around outdoor equipment free of debris also goes a long way. If your system is more than 10–15 years old and has been requiring frequent repairs, it may be time to discuss replacement options that can handle our local climate more reliably.
Extreme weather is part of life in upstate New York. Having a heating and cooling system that can keep up—and a local company you can reach when it doesn’t—makes a real difference.
If your system has failed or is showing signs of trouble, don’t wait for the temperature to get worse.
